Medica’s Lean Team
Over the last two years, 40 employees at Medica Packaging have successfully completed their Lean Education and Development Technical Certification. The scheme, run by LEAD – the Lean Education And Development Group, focuses on continuous workforce development through the hands-on engagement of a business’ workforce in real continuous improvement activity.
During the process, Medica’s team has taken part in training to understand the aims and objectives of Lean and to learn the tools and techniques to help identify and implement improvement across key areas of the business that will provide measurable results.
The Lean teams then had to put those newly acquired skills into practice, establishing project groups to work on relevant and practical projects within the business which would benefit from improvement. This included projects to reduce the need for outside storage through better space optimisation at the Crewe facility, the implementation of a new delivery system for consumables and a project to review in-house manufacture versus outsourcing in certain areas.
Medica’s Head of Operations Tim Standing said, “We are delighted that 40 members of our team from various parts of the business, have taken part in the Lean training and successfully gained their certification. The projects the teams have worked on during the process have brought real and measurable improvements to the business. The training is real-time and hands-on and those taking part could see how their new skills have helped to improve business performance. The training scheme complements Medica’s common goal and business objective of working together, for continuous improvement throughout the business.”
